WHAT ARE CARRIER OILS (CO)?

Reading the Doterra website: “They are vegetable oils with little-to-no scent that are used to dilute Essential Oils. Are not volatile like Essential Oils, and are shelf-stable”.

CO are simply oils derived from the fatty portion of a plant, mainly from nuts and seeds. Are generally unscented, which makes them easy to mix with any other Oil.

They have longer shelf life compared to Essential Oils cause they do not evaporate as easily (less volatile). Are less subject to changes in their chemical composition as a result of heat and light exposure.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CO AND ESSENTIAL OILS?

From the International Federation of Aromatherapists website: “ Carrier Oils are “fixed” Oils by definition. They do not evaporate, unlike EO, which are volatile and evaporate on contact with air.

They do not have the strong aromas associated with Essential Oils. Sometimes known as ‘base oils’, since they form the base when creating a blend.

Also, unlike Essential Oils, CO have limited skin penetration because of the large size of their molecules”.

CO derive by the fatty portions of plants, whereas we “extract” EO from plants, using different methods depending on the specific Oil.

CO can go rancid over time, while Essential Oils can only “oxidise” and loose their therapeutic benefits.

THE BENEFITS OF CO.

CO are not just Oils we use to safely apply Essential Oils on the skin, or “massage oils”.

Because they come mainly from seeds and nuts, they contain vitamins and minerals, along with fatty acids. As a result, each CO has its own unique therapeutic properties, and is suitable for different skin types and products.

CO help to retain moisture in the skin. They help Essential Oils to penetrate the skin in a safe and more efficient way.

HOW TO USE CARRIER OILS.

WHEN TO USE CO

When using EO on your skin, we must remember that not all are suitable to be applied “neat” (without dilution). Some EO are very strong and can cause irritations to the skin. Therefore it is VITAL to use them in conjunction with a CO. Age and skin type also play an important role when deciding if an EO needs dilution.

HOW TO USE THEM

CO are what we use to dilute EO for topical use (i.e. applied on the skin). They effectively and safely “carry” the EO into the skin, and stop those precious products from evaporating too quickly. This is why, regardless of skin sensitivities, it’s also cost effective to use CO when covering larger areas of the skin.

We can use CO by themselves or mixed with another Oil. Due to their therapeutic properties, they are excellent in homemade body care products such as soaps and body butters.

WHAT IS THE BEST CO FOR ESSENTIAL OILS.

There are so many CO on the market, and it can be difficult to identify which one to choose. Because different CO have different properties and benefits, there is no BEST Carrier Oil really.

It depends on what results you want to achieve, and where you want to apply the Oil.

I’ve tried a few so far, but I personally love using Jojoba Oil for my face. It dries quickly and doesn’t leave any sticky or greasy feeling; but I love using doTerra Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) for my body, and wouldn’t use any other type of Oil.

The baseline is know your skin type, but also listen to your body and do what feels right for you.

HOW TO CHOOSE?

To give you a hand, I’ve put together a list of the most common Carrier Oils. Here you will find some information (like their properties and benefits) that will help you choose.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s a good starting point.

WHERE TO BUY CARRIER OILS.

When buying skincare products, you want to make sure you are using the highest quality that you can afford. Carrier Oils are no different. If possible you should purchase cold-pressed (as heat will destroy their properties), pure, unrefined Oils with no additives.

This is an excellent Jojoba oil that you can purchase from Amazon.co.uk :

THE WINNER 06/20* ORGANIC Jojoba Oil Vegan + Cold-Pressed – 100ml Light-Protection Glass Bottle – Skin Care Rich in Vitamin E for Soft Skin & Hair & Healthy Nails – 100% Pure Natural Cosmetics

You can purchase Fractionated Coconut Oil directly from the Doterra website.

Jojoba Oil and FCO both work perfectly with doTerra Essential Oils. To start with, that’s pretty much ALL you need for a natural skincare.

If you are planning on making any DIY product using Essential Oils, make sure you know what containers are safe for use. Read my post here to learn how to choose safely.

CONCLUSION:

Just remember that the key to success in knowing how to choose CO is experimenting, so try new products, until you find what works best for you.

Just be patient!
