THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR NAUSEA

Sadly for me, when I was pregnant with my last child, I had not discovered the power and health benefits of essential oils yet.

During each of my pregnancies I suffered terribly from morning sickness that lasted around the clock.

Indeed, my morning sickness was how I found out that I was expecting my first baby.

I felt terrible and just didn’t know what to try to relieve the nausea. Nothing I ate would make it go away.

Here I am going to list the best essential oils for nausea, and I’ll share with you how to use them.

IMPORTANT

The content of this blog post is intended for information purposes only. It is not intended to replace professional medical advice.

I am not a doctor and I’m only sharing my personal experience here.

If you are unwell or sick, always ask your trusted doctor or medical practitioner for advice. Pay particular attention if you are allergic or intolerant to any food and/or medication, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Children and elderly people should also seek medical attention quickly if unwell or experiencing any symptom.

Even if you don’t experience any symptom, always contact your trusted health provider if in doubt. If you feel unwell and are worried, it is safer to ask for medical advice from a professional than to wait.

Never risk it!

WHAT IS NAUSEA?

Nausea is that queasy feeling of discomfort in your stomach, throat and mouth that feels like you are about to throw up any minute.

Sometimes you will indeed vomit, but not always. That will depend on a variety of factors.

You can experience nausea in waves, or throughout the day.

What is the main cause of nausea?

According to medicalnewstoday.com :

“There are many triggers for nausea. Some common causes include:

  • stress or anxiety
  • motion sickness
  • pregnancy
  • phobias
  • migraine
  • food poisoning
  • viruses, such as influenza (flu) or norovirus (stomach flu)
  • gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • certain medications, such as hormonal contraceptives or beta-blockers
  • problems with the inner ear, such as labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis
  • thyroid disorders
  • eating disorders”.

How Long Can nausea last?

Nausea in itself is not a condition, but a symptom of something else going on in your body.

As a result, different ailments, digestive issues or pregnancy can result in nausea that can last anything from a few hours to a few weeks.

When should I be concerned about nausea?

Just like I always recommend, when in doubt always contact your trusted doctor or medical practitioner.

Do not underestimate you nausea, as it can be a sign of a serious issue.

And even if it is nothing to worry about, your doctor might be able to prescribe something to improve it.

Nausea can badly interfere with your daily life, so it’s worth seeking medical advice anyway.

According to healthline.com

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Sudden and unexplained weight loss;
  • New symptoms;
  • Sever headaches or abdominal pain;
  • Chest pain;
  • Blurred vision;
  • High temperature;
  • Green or bloody vomit.

How do I get rid of my nausea feeling?

Sadly, in the majority of cases, a medical prescription is needed to get rid of your nausea.

However, there are a few things you can do at home to try and relieve it.

Here are some simple home remedies you could try before seeing your doctor.

eat little and often

Depending on what is causing your nausea, large and heavy meals can trigger it.

Avoid eating difficult to digest foods and limit your portions.

At the same time, try to eat often, as an empty stomach can also be responsible for a new wave of nausea.

STAY HYDRATED

Drink a lot of water throughout the day to keep well hydrated.

You can have herbal teas, freshly squeezed juices and decaffeinated drinks, but stay away from too much caffeine, sugary and fizzy drinks.

Coconut water is particularly good in case your nausea is accompanied by vomit.

STAY AWAY FROM SPICY FOODS

Spicy foods can upset your stomach and therefore trigger nausea.

Stay away from them until your symptoms have resolved.

AVOID  HARD TO DIGEST AND FATTY FOODS

As mentioned above, fatty foods are generally speaking hard to digest, and can make your nausea worse. Better stay away from them for the time being.

eat bland food

Although this might not sound too appetising, bland food can keep you well fed without triggering nausea. Stick to simple meals like grilled chicken or fish, steamed veggies, rice, toast, crackers, etc.

AVOID PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AFTER EATING

Avoid exercising straight after a meal. You can opt for a walk if you prefer, but avoid any strenuous activity.

ARE ESSENTIAL OILS GOOD FOR NAUSEA?

Thankfully for us, essential oils are indeed very helpful to relieve nausea and morning sickness.

There are many oils and blends that can help, depending on what is the main cause behind your symptoms.

Let’s have a look at some of the oils I would recommend.

IMPOrtant

Only use 100% unadulterated and pure essential oils, from a reputable company.

Never use essential oils topically unless properly diluted, and only use them after a patch test.

Pay particular attention if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or on older people and young children.

Some people might develop skin irritations or adverse reactions.

Never ingest essential oils without reading the label first, as not all oils can be consumed internally.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

ARE ESSENTIAL OILS SAFE DURING PREGNANCY?

Before deciding to try essential oils for the first time if you are pregnant, please read this post, for safe guidelines regarding the use of oils during pregnancy.

Pregnant women should never use any essential oil or blend without asking their doctor first!

essential oil dilution ratio chart

Before using any essential oil topically, you will need to dilute it properly.

You can use any carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, etc for the purpose.

However if you are pregnant, you will need to use a higher dilution ratio.

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Lavender might not be the first essential oil that comes to mind when you think of nausea.

Indeed, lavender oil is mainly known for its calming and relaxing properties.

However, when the nausea is caused by anxiety, lavender can really be helpful.

Diffuse at night or whenever you are experiencing anxiety and stress.

Make a roller bottle and apply on pulse points and over the heart.

GINGER ESSENTIAL OIL

Ginger oil, on the other hand, is probably the first one you think of when you suffer from nausea.

In fact, ginger has been used since ancient times in traditional medicine to treat nausea and vomiting.

Many a pregnant woman have been told to nibble on ginger biscuits when morning sickness strikes!

Ginger oil is safe during pregnancy and can ben used to flavour food, in the diffuser and applied topically (on your tummy, forehead and wrists).

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Peppermint oil is very effective at relieving nausea and morning sickness.

In fact, this oil can be safely used during pregnancy as long as it is not ingested straight from the bottle or in a veggie cap.

Peppermint oil has a fresh and soothing aroma and it might help to relax gastric muscles. Therefore it might prevent them from cramping.

You can diffuse this essential oil or inhale straight from the bottle.

Alternatively, put a drop on your hands and breathe it in.

If used topically, make sure to avoid any contact with your eyes as peppermint will cause them to tear up. You could apply a drop on your  temples, forehead, and neck.

Massaging your tummy with it is also very beneficial.

Lastly, you could make peppermint tea by simply adding a drop to your regular black tea.

It is best to avoid the use of peppermint oil if you are nursing, as this essential oil might interfere with your milk supply.

FENNEL ESSENTIAL OIL

Fennel has been used for centuries as a powerful remedy to soothe and aid digestion.

Indeed, fennel is well known to help with constipation, flatulence and nausea.

If your nausea is the result of digestive problems, by keeping your digestive system healthy, you might relieve your symptoms.

Fennel oil can be used aromatically, topically and internally.

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL

A very popular essential oil, lemon can be used safely throughout the day.

Start you morning by putting a drop in water before consuming any drink and food, or use it to flavour your meals or a smoothie.

Diffuse and apply lemon oil as needed, but avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours after topical application.

CINNAMON ESSENTIAL OIL

A very powerful anti bacterial and antiviral, cinnamon oil can help relieve nausea caused by gastro-intestinal problems.

Cinnamon oil can be diffused and used to flavour food.

Avoid topical use unless heavily diluted, as cinnamon is considered an “hot oil”.

CARDAMOM ESSENTIAL OIL

Part of the ginger family of plants, cardamom is well known to help reducing nausea, stomach issues and anxiety.

This spicy and sweet oil can be used alone or in combination with other oils.

You can use it in your diffuser, in an aromatherapy message, or ingest it.

SPEARMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Very similar to peppermint, although less known and used, spearmint oil is very effective at combatting nausea.

Its fresh smell can soothe nausea and it is also very good to ease a general sense of uneasiness.

Just like peppermint, you can diffuse spearmint, apply it topically (on your temples, forehead, back of the neck and on your tummy), or ingest it.

EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL

Another excellent oil to relieve nausea.

Eucalyptus oil is very strong, and needs to be used with extreme caution, especially around small children, the elderly and pets.

This oil is effective against nausea, motion sickness and morning sickness. It is also a very good idea to use eucalyptus if your nausea is the result of migraines, as this oil is  quite effective at relieving headaches.

Diffuse eucalyptus in your diffuser or apply topically (after heavy dilution).

Unfortunately not all varieties of eucalyptus can be ingested, so I’d consider it better not to risk it: in my opinion it is safer not to ingest eucalyptus at all.

CILANTRO ESSENTIAL OIL

Cilantro essential oil comes from the same plant as coriander oil, although the latter is extracted from the seeds, while cilantro is distilled from the leaves.

This essential oil is quite remarkable when it comes to treat gas, bloating and constipation, as well as liver and kidney toxicity and any type of fungal or bacterial infection that might affect your digestive system.

Use internally (best in a veggie cap as its taste is not very appealing), topically (massage your tummy with it), and aromatically.

ROMAN CHAMOMILE ESSENTIAL OIL

Chamomile oil is mainly known for its calming effects.

Indeed, if your nausea is the symptom of stress and anxiety, chamomile essential oil can be very effective.

This very gentle oil can be used aromatically, topically and internally.

GREEN MANDARIN ESSENTIAL OIL

A member of the citrus oils family, green mandarin is excellent in relieving gas, constipation and heartburn.

If paired with juniper berry and lemon (in a veggie cap), green mandarin is effective at supporting liver function, help with kidney toxicity and an obstructed bile flow.

Its sweet and fresh scent is also very good at relieving stress and anxiety.

LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL

Lemongrass is probably my go-to essential oil when it comes to nausea.

I put a few drops of this essential oil in a roller bottle and apply it on pulse points whenever we are about to travel for long distances, such as during flights, ferry trips or simply long car rides.

This oil has been used for centuries to relieve nausea and I highly recommend it.

Lemongrass can be used topically, aromatically and internally.
