Just yesterday we were talking about the importance of incorporating oil cleansing in your skin care routine, and the benefits of it.

So you might be asking yourself which carrier oils are best for certain skin types and whether or not these oils clog your pores, as with so many natural oils and butters it can be overwhelming to choose among them.

Luckily there’s help out there my friend.

EVER HEARD OF THE COMEDOGENIC SCALE?

Basically the scale is a cheat sheet that will rank oils based on their propensity to clog your skin pores. The scale has a range of values between 0 and 5.

WHAT IS COMEDOGENIC RATING?

Here’s how the numbers rank on the scale:

0 – won’t clog pores at all

1 – very low likelihood of clogging pores

2 – moderately low likelihood

3 – moderate likelihood

4 – fairly high likelihood

5 – high likelihood of clogging pores

IS THE COMEDOGENIC SCALE ACCURATE?

Keep in mind that those values are not set in stone as everybody is different, and many factors need to be considered when choosing an oil. Diet, lifestyle, race, health, stress levels etc., all play a vital role when it comes to how your skin looks like, and that will impact the way oils work on you.

As a general rule anyway, people with acne prone skin (like me…sigh) should avoid oils with a comedogenic rating above 2, whereas people with drier skin might prefer a more emollient oil toward the middle of the scale, as very few people can use “heavier” oils without breaking out.

CONCLUSION

The baseline here my friend is know your skin type, but also listen to your body and do what feels right for you.

I personally love using jojoba oil for my face as I find it dries quickly and doesn’t leave any sticky or greasy feeling; but I love using doTerra Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) for my body, and wouldn’t use any other type of oil.

Both Jojoba oil and FCO work perfectly with doTerra essential oils and that’s pretty much ALL you need to get started on your Essential Oils journey.

If you have been thinking about getting started with Essential oils, and about empowering yourself through a natural lifestyle, feel free to message me.
