What is a natural scent booster for laundry?

A non-toxic homemade laundry scent booster is one of the many natural laundry products you could easily make at home.

It is made by mixing only 3 natural products.

You use it in your washing machine, alongside your favorite laundry detergent for fresh smelling laundry. Indeed, its natural fragrance will give your clothes a long-lasting scent.

How can I make my laundry smell good without scent boosters?

Let’s face it: dirty laundry smells bad…..really bad! Sometimes socks, workout clothes and towels sit in the laundry basket for too long, and the result is truly an unpleasant aroma.

If you use all natural laundry detergents, sometimes they are not enough to get rid of that awful smell. You need a little extra! That’s where this homemade laundry scent booster comes in handy. All you have to do is to add a tablespoon or two to your regular detergent and: voila’, the bad smells are gone!

why you should make this DIY natural laundry scent booster

If you are wondering why you should even bother making this recipe when you can simply grab a ready made product in your local store, well, let me explain.

There are several reasons why you should switch to this homemade laundry scent booster.

For example:

  • Homemade laundry scent booster is very very inexpensive to make, and it will save you a lot of dosh in the long run (and who doesn’t want to go for the cheaper option?);
  • You can totally personalise your recipe by choosing different essential oils every time;
  • A DIY product doesn’t contain any hidden and possibly risky ingredient;
  • A homemade laundry scent booster smells way better than store bought ones;
  • Unlike conventional laundry scent boosters, homemade ones don’t have artificial fragrances. This is most important as synthetic fragrances are known endocrine disruptors, linked to hormonal disruption and fertility issues.

What does Epsom salt do in laundry?

There is conflicting advice when it comes to using epsom salt in your laundry.

I personally use it and have done so for a few years without any problem. However, I do not live in an area with hard water.

If you prefer, you could swap the epsom salt for another type of salt, such as kosher salt (coarse salt).

According to this article,

Due to its chemical composition, epsom salt might have a negative effect on your laundry (making it dirtier). Indeed, it’s the magnesium in this salt that make it ineffective with laundry.

Calcium and magnesium are commonly found in water, and a higher concentration of either of the two will make your water hard.

Those two minerals will bind with soaps and detergents, making them less effective at cleaning your laundry.

Will Epsom salt damage my washing machine?

No, epsom salt will not damage your washing machine. Indeed, it is safe for both regular washing machines and HE machines.

What does baking soda do for laundry?

Baking soda can be very effective to improve the cleaning power of your detergent, and to soften your clothes.

According to this website:”No matter which detergent you choose, you can boost its cleaning and deodorizing power by adding Baking Soda. How? Chemistry! When paired with your laundry detergent, Baking Soda uses the power of pure sodium bicarbonate — a natural occurring substance — to:

  • Neutralize odors by balancing pH levels, and
  • Soften wash water, so you can use less detergent or bleach — and make it more effective”.

Can I mix vinegar and baking soda in washing machine?

Regardless of what type of DIY cleaning products your are making, you should never mix vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

That is because, when they are used together, they practically neutralise each other. Indeed vinegar has a low pH, while bicarbonate of soda has a high pH.

For best results, you should always use them separately.

In the case of laundry, for example, you can use bicarbonate of soda directly in the drum of your machine, while you could add vinegar to the softener compartment (in the rinse cycle only). This way, the 2 ingredients will not mix and interfere with each other.

What is the best essential oil for laundry?

There are several essential oils you could use for your all natural laundry scent booster.

They are all good for the purpose, and ultimately the choice will depend on what you prefer, and what you already have.

For example, you could use:

  • Rosemary essential oil;
  • Lavender essential oil;
  • Wild orange essential oil;
  • Lemon essential oil;
  • Peppermint essential oil;
  • Basil essential oil;
  • Etc.

Why not experiment a little?

Have fun creating your own personal scent by mixing up different essential oils!

You could try a blend of different oils and see what you prefer.

I personally add rosemary oil and lavender oil to my homemade laundry scent booster, but feel free to try different combinations!

Remember that a few drops of essential oils will go a long way as they are very powerful.

IMPORTANT

Only use high quality, 100% unadulterated and pure essential oils, from a reputable company.

Never use essential oils topically unless properly diluted, and only use them after a patch test. Especially if you have sensitive skin!

Pay particular attention if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or on older people and young children.

Some people might develop skin irritation or adverse reactions.

Never ingest essential oils without reading the label first, as not all oils can be consumed internally.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

If you are still on the fence about using essential oils, and wold like a little more education before you start, you should definitively check this post:
