Everyone needs a good chocolate brownie “mix in a jar” recipe in their arsenal.

And I can’t think of a better present, especially around Valentine’s day, than homemade chocolate brownies in a jar mix!

This mason jar brownie mix is a favorite recipe in our house, because it’s very easy to put together, and is a great activity to do with your children when they are bored!

HOW TO MAKE EASY CHOCOLATE BROWNIES RECIPE IN A JAR MIX

Creating your very own brownie mix in a jar is very simple.

You don’t need to buy any of those box mixes available in every store.

WHY I LOVE THESE BROWNIES IN A JAR MIX

This “brownies in a jar mix” is the perfect recipe because:

  • it uses  simple ingredients you might already have in your pantry;
  • it uses healthy (-ish) ingredients, and it doesn’t come from a pre-packaged, brownie mix box;
  • you will only need about 5 minutes to make it;
  • this recipe is perfect every single time;
  • for this homemade brownies, you will not need any vegetable oil;
  • it doesn’t require any chocolate melting over a double boiler;
  • it’s ideal as a Valentine’s day gift in a jar: who doesn’t love a chocolate gift in a jar?

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU ADD TO A BROWNIES IN A JAR MIX?

This particular brownies mix in a jar only uses only a few ingredients.

NATURAL COCOA POWDER

Organic and fair-trade are what I would recommend, but any type and brand will work of course. However, if you are using unsweetened cocoa powder, you might want to up the amount of sugar used in the recipe, depending on your taste.

SUGAR

Plain white sugar is all you need for this recipe. You could also use brown sugar, if you prefer.

I never baked this amazing brownie mix using sugar alternatives, such as stevia.

You are free to try and experiment of course!

FLOUR

This chewy brownies recipe calls for all purpose flour. However, you can make the recipe gluten free by substituting it with your favourite gluten free brand.

SEA SALT

A good brownie mix recipe needs salt, so don’t forget it.

Sea salt is a natural option, and in my opinion is the best salt, even when it comes to baking.

CHOCOLATE CHIPS

As far as chocolate chips go, any type you have on hand will work.

I personally prefer unsweetened or semisweet chocolate chips, as the brownie recipe already calls for sugar.  Whether you are using dark or white ones it’s up to you.

If you are aiming for baking dark chocolate brownies, then probably dark chips would work best. On the other hand, white chocolate gives them a fun look!

WHAT SUPPLIES DO YOU NEED TO MAKE BROWNIES MIX IN A JAR?

  • Mason Jars (Kilner Jars): this is where you will store the brownie mix. A wide mouth jar is best, as it will make it easier for you to put the ingredients inside it.
  • Funnel: using a funnel will make the whole process so much easier and less messy, so I highly recommend you use one.
  • Tags and Labels – if you are using this brownie mix as a gift, you will add a nice touch by decorating it with a nice label.

I have created a FREE PRINTABLE FOR YOU, with downloadable labels and full instructions, so don’t forget to grab it!

HOW TO MAKE BROWNIE MIX IN A JAR?

Making this chocolate gift in a jar couldn’t be simpler.

You have two options: you can layer the ingredients one by one, or put them all together in a bowl, mix them and then add them to the jar.

Personally, I think that the layered look works better as it is prettier to see.

You could also make multiple jars at the same time if you were planning on making a few as Valentine’s day gifts for your girlfriends!

Once all the ingredients are in the jar, just close it tightly, and decorate it with a ribbon or twine, and my printable labels.

Add the date, so you will know when the contents of the jar need to be discarded.

Don’t forget to add the full instructions to it, or the person who receives the gift will not know what to do!

DRY INGREDIENTS FOR THE JAR:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips

Once you have gathered all your ingredients, firstly mix the flour with the baking powder. Make sure to mix thoroughly.

Then, simply layer the dry ingredients in a large mason jar, making sure to close the lid tightly.

I like to place the chocolate chips at the very top of the mix, but that’s a personal choice naturally.

Lastly, decorate the jar with a ribbon or twine, custom labels, a gift tag and baking instructions.

WET INGREDIENTS TO ADD WHEN MAKING THE BROWNIES:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

BROWNIE MIX IN A JAR INSTRUCTIONS: HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

When ready to bake the brownies, heat oven at 180 degrees.

Using parchment paper, line a square baking pan and leave it aside (an 8×8 baking tray works perfectly for this recipe).

Open the pre-made jar and pour the dry ingredients into a large bowl.

Slowly melt butter in a small saucepan on low heat. Alternatively, use a medium bowl on top of a double boiler.

Add the wet ingredients (melted butter, eggs and vanilla extract) to the flour mix.

Mix all the ingredients together, using a wooden spoon or a rubber spatula.

Pay attention not to over mix the brownie batter, or the brownies will turn out hard.

Pour the mix into your prepared square pan, and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes.

After about half an hour in the oven, you can test if the brownies are ready. Simply insert a tooth pick in the centre of the pan and check that the consistency is firm, but not completely hard.

Take the pan out of the oven while the center of the brownies is still gooey because they will harden a bit as they cool down.

It is very important not to overcook these brownies, in order to have a soft and fudgy consistency.

Let them cool down completely on a wire rack before slicing them.

IMPORTANT

Although I always use my trusty food processor when I cook or bake, for this specific recipe I would not recommend it.

This batter is very “delicate”, and you must make sure not to overmix it. Otherwise, the result will be hard brownies!

WHAT MAKES BROWNIES MOIST?

I love my brownies moist, almost melt-in-mouth moist.

Sometimes it’s hard to know how to get that right consistency.

I have found this very helpful article that I think you might like to try.

HOW TO SERVE HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

These decadent brownies are ideal to serve with vanilla ice cream or custard cream.

But, they are equally good on their own!

SHOULD BROWNIES BE SERVED HOT OR COLD?

That is the one million dollar question, isn’t it?

In my home, we devour our brownies practically as soon as they are out of the oven, so they don’t really get the chance to get cold!

However, these chocolate brownies can be eaten cold.

Alternatively, you could just warm them up for a few seconds in the microwave or in the oven, for a  pleasant chocolate flavor.

HOW TO STORE CHOCOLATE CHIPS BROWNIES

On the odd chance you have some brownies left, you can simply store them in an airtight container. Alternatively, place them in a large pan or box, and cover them with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

Make sure to consume them within 2-3 days.

HOW LONG WILL THE BROWNIE MIX IN A JAR LAST?

This brownie mix will last in your cupboard for up to a year. Granted that you keep the mix in a closed jar, in a cupboard, at room temperature, and away from direct sunlight.
