CAN YOU EAT DANDELIONS? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EATING DANDELIONS?

The very humble dandelion is truly a marvel of nature!

Every single part of the plant is edible, from root to petals.

Its leaves contain (among other vitamins) vitamin a and vitamin c. Furthermore, they are a good source of folate, thiamine, riboflavin, calcium, iron, potassium and manganese.

The leaves are very nutritious and can be eaten in a fresh salad, whereas the flower buds can be added to omelettes or used for making yummy fritters.

The yellow petals add a lovely bright colour to cakes and bakes.

Dandelion root is often dried and made into tea or a coffee substitute, but you can also eat it whole as you would other root vegetables.

Roasted dandelion root can be found in your local health food store, online or at a grocery store.

DOES DANDELION TEA HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?

There is a lot of debate in the scientific community regarding the possible side effects of dandelion tea. Some studies have suggested that it may be harmful to certain individuals, such as those with pre-existing medical conditions or who are pregnant or breastfeeding. There is also some evidence to suggest that dandelion tea can interact with certain over-the-counter or prescription medications, which could lead to potentially dangerous side effects. However, other researchers argue that these concerns seem to be largely unfounded and based on outdated information. Thus, more research is needed in order to fully understand the potential effects of dandelion tea. Until then, it is best for people who are interested in drinking this tea to consult their doctor first and to take any warnings about side effects seriously.

From “healthline.com”:

“Dandelion is considered safe for most people. However, some people may have an allergic reaction from touching or ingesting dandelion. Dandelion has also been found to interact with certain medications, including diuretics, lithium, and Cipro.

If you are taking any prescription medications, consult your doctor before drinking dandelion tea.”

IS DANDELION TEA A LAXATIVE?

Some people believe that dandelion tea is a laxative, but there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. While dandelion tea may have a mild diuretic effect, it is not likely to cause severe digestive issues. However, if you are concerned about the possibility of dandelion tea affecting your digestive system, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider before consuming it.

IS IT OK TO DRINK DANDELION TEA EVERY DAY?

There is a lot of debate around the question of whether it is okay to drink dandelion tea every day. Some argue that this herbal tea has numerous health benefits, including reduced inflammation, better digestion, and increased energy levels. Others claim that dandelion tea may have some unwanted side effects, such as causing allergic reactions or interfering with medications. Ultimately, there is not yet enough scientific evidence to support any definitive conclusions either way. However, in light of the current research and anecdotal reports from those who have consumed dandelion tea regularly, it seems reasonable to suggest that this beverage can be enjoyed safely on an occasional basis. At the same time, it is always wise to consult with a healthcare professional before making any major dietary changes or starting a new supplement regimen.

WHAT PART OF DANDELION IS USED FOR TEA?

When making dandelion detox tea, not only the flower heads are used. You can most certainly use the leaves and the rot of the plant, although they would add a more bitter taste to your tea.

CAN I USE DANDELIONS FROM MY YARD FOR TEA?

You can use dandelions from your yard for tea, but you’ll need to take some precautions.

Firstly, make sure that the dandelions you choose are from an area that has not been treated with pesticides or herbicides. Attention needs to be paid also if you have dogs or pets around your garden!

Secondly, you’ll also want to wash the dandelions thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris before using them.

See the water solution I recommend below, in the recipe section.

HOW TO MAKE DANDELION TEA TASTE BETTER

Although dandelion tea has many health benefits, it comes with a slightly bitter taste. Hence, some people don’t like it, and prefer to use other types of tea.

However, there are many different ways to make dandelion tea taste better.

One of the most popular methods is to add a variety of natural ingredients, such as lemon juice, organic dehydrated lemon peel, honey, maple syrup, cranberry juice, or pieces of fresh fruit. This combinations not only add flavour and sweetness, but also help to balance out some of the bitter notes that are commonly associated with dandelion tea. Additionally, you can try infusing the tea using different spices, such as cinnamon, ginger, or mint. These fragrant herbs can give your tea a unique and refreshing flavour that makes each sip even more enjoyable. Whether you are looking for something sweet or spicy, with a little bit of experimentation you can find a way to make your dandelion tea taste absolutely delicious!

BEST TIME OF DAY TO DRINK DANDELION TEA

There is no definitive answer to the question of when is the best time of day to drink dandelion tea. For some people, the optimal time may be in the morning, as a pick-me-up to start their day energised and alert. For others, mid-afternoon might be the most convenient time to make and drink a cup of relaxing dandelion tea. And still others may enjoy sipping on dandelion tea before bed as a way to wind down and prepare for sleep. Ultimately, there is no right or wrong time of day to drink this delicious and nutritious beverage – it simply comes down to personal preference and what works best for your schedule and lifestyle. So why not try out a few different times of day and find out which one suits you best? The key ingredient in dandelion tea – the dandelion leaf itself – can always be enjoyed at any point throughout the day! Whether you are an early bird or more of a night owl, there’s no better way than with a warm mug of dandelion detox tea.

HOW TO MAKE DANDELION TEA

Here’s the fun part of this post: how to actually make the best dandelion detox tea!

Of course, you can purchase dandelion tea from your local health food store or online, but making your own using dandelion flowers is very easy.

how to harvest and prepare dandelion flowers

To make dandelion detox tea, start by harvesting a handful of fresh dandelion flowers. Wash them thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris.

You could make a water solution by using 4 parts of fresh water and 1 part of vinegar in a large bowl. This mix will ensure your flowers are thoroughly cleaned before use.

Let your picked dandelion flowers soak in the mix for about 5 minutes, before straining them and rinse them off well.

After washing the flowers, let them dry completely before using them to make your detox tea.

Once the flowers are completely dry, you can store them whole, or grind them to a powder if you prefer.

HOW DO YOU DRY DANDELIONS?

There are several methods to dry dandelions (or any flower).

1) You can simply leave the dandelions out in the sun to dry them and prevent oxidation. In order to use this method, make sure to place the flowers on a tray, in a single layer, first, and then cover them with a kitchen cloth or paper, to avoid dust and insects gathering on them.

This method will take at least a few hours, depending on the amount of sun on the day, and the spot you choose.

2) Alternatively, you can place them in the oven and roast them. The oven should be pre heated to the lowest setting possible. Leave the flowers in the oven for 2 to 3 hours before checking if they are done, or if they need a bit more time.

3) Lastly, you can use your dehydrator, if you have one. This is probably the safest method, as your machine will dehydrate the flowers efficiently and without waste.

HOW LONG CAN YOU STORE DANDELIONS?

The good thing about being able to dry or dehydrate dandelion flowers, is that you can harvest them in spring and summer, when they are at their best, and preserve them for the winter, in order to enjoy dandelion detox tea any time you want.

However, you need to make sure you know how to store them properly.

Once you have have washed and dehydrated your dandelions properly, you can store them in an airtight glass jar, away from heat and direct sunlight. The best option is in a cool kitchen cupboard.

If properly stored, those flowers can last anything from 6 months to a year.

HOW TO PREPARE DANDELION DETOX TEA.

When you are ready to make your detox tea, simply fill your electric kettle, or a pot on the stove, and bring 1-2 cups of water to a boil.

Add your desired amount of dried dandelion flowers to the boiling water, remove from the stove, and allow the mixture to steep for 10-15 minutes.

At this point, you can add other ingredients to the tea, to make it more palatable and to add further health benefits to it.

When you’re ready to drink your tea, strain out any solids using a fine mesh sieve.

This tea can be drank hot or iced, the choice is yours!

THE JILLIAN MICHAELS DETOX WATER RECIPE

There are tons of dandelion detox tea and water recipes on line. However, the Jillian Michaels one seem to be very popular.

I’ve yet to try it, but I thought I’d mention it, in case you wanted to check it out.

The website claims: “Jillian Michaels’ Detox Water is an all-natural, healthy diuretic drink that can help you lose up to 5 pounds of bloat in 7 days. Add this drink to your healthy diet for an energy boost and loose that bloat!”

This detox water uses:

  • 60 oz. distilled water;
  • 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice;
  • 1 Tbsp. cranberry juice (100% Cranberry Juice with no added sugar)
  • 1 Dandelion Root Tea Bag.

Notice how this recipe doesn’t use freshly picked dandelion flowers, but a pre-made dandelion tea bag.

As already mentioned, I have not personally tried this recipe yet, so please use it at your own discretion.
